LaserAce® GIS Pole

The LaserAce® GIS Pole is a unique, fully integrated (and cableless) GPS and laser offset positioning system.

The LaserAce® GIS Pole is a novel 'hybrid' laser orientation and positioning tool for use in Surveying and GIS data collection operations. It has been designed for use with the NEW LaserAce® Pocket Series laser systems (LaserAce® Survey, LaserAce® Hypsometer and/ or LaserAce® Burden Finder).

Using the LaserAce® GIS Pole with one of the LaserAce® Pocket Series instruments, the LaserAce® Survey activates the pole sensors when connected via the ‘hot shoe’ arrangement and the system can be used on a lightweight tripod or monopod. The LaserAce® GIS Pole sensors can include EGNOS/ WAAS enabled 12 channel GPS system or various 3rd Party GPS devices attached to the top of the pole. A 3-axis fluxgate electronic compass and an optical horizontal angle encoder are used to measure the horizontal angle. The entire unit is powered by 4 C-cells, also housed inside the pole.

In addition to the standard LaserAce® Survey functions which include missing distance, subtended distance, slope, heights, gradients, areas and volume computations, the LaserAce® Survey is able to display, record and calculate GPS offset positions in GPS coordinates, without the aid of external data recorders, computers or PDAs. The advantage of this being that the ‘pole position’ or ‘offset target position’ coordinates can be output to any standard GPS mapping software package. The GPS ‘baseline’ mode enables users to quickly determine a local baseline position and orientation.

Once the baseline azimuth is determined the laser zeros the optical encoder and thereafter all horizontal measurements taken with the pole are with reference to True North. Where GPS signals are unavailable the onboard digital compass may be used to reference the poles encoder to Magnetic North or horizontal ‘bearings’ to targets may be directly observed using the compass reference only.

Where the compass accuracy or magnetic interference is a problem and no GPS signal is available, the LaserAce® GIS Pole encoder unit may be used to ‘traverse’ or ‘resect’ from known positions to determine position and orientation as if it were a conventional theodolite. All observed data (distance to target, vertical angle, horizontal angle, GPS, latitude, longitude and height may be displayed (on the LaserAce® Survey’s graphics LCD display), recorded (on the internal memory) and / or transferred to third party computers and recorders via the integral Bluetooth® (or serial RS232) data communications link.

In the current ‘GPS mode’ the LaserAce® GIS Pole acts like a conventional pole mounted GPS system with dynamic position updates at the rate of 1 per second. An average ‘position’ function allows the user to record and output mean GPS positions. When linked to GIS filed computers with mapping software, the LaserAce® GIS Pole is an excellent stand alone GPS/ GIS system.

With EGNOS/ WAAS and other differential correction signals, a sub metre positional accuracy is easily achievable. Applications for the LaserAce® GIS Pole include forestry, mapping, mining, accident surveys, asset management and much much more.

The LaserAce® GIS Pole is highly portable, easy to use and suitable for use in extreme environments. Cable free data transfer from the pole is achieved via the LaserAce® Bluetooth® data radio.
